Family Therapy Q&A

What is family therapy?

Family therapy is a type of psychological counseling that addresses issues within families and intimate relationships. It understands that family dynamics and interactions can strongly influence an individual's psychological health and behavior.

Rather than focusing solely on an individual, family therapy views problems within the context of the family system and works toward resolving conflicts and improving communication among family members.

What issues can family therapy address?

Family therapy can address a wide range of issues, including:

  • Communication problems
  • Conflict resolution
  • Behavioral concerns (exhibited by children or adolescents)
  • Substance misuse (addiction-related hardships within the family)
  • Mental health conditions (e.g., depression, anxiety, or schizophrenia)
  • Life transitions (e.g., divorce, remarriage, or relocation)
  • Parenting challenges (managing parenting-related stress or conflicts)

No matter the stress-related condition(s) you deal with, I have the expertise to provide guidance and help the family navigate challenges.

Who is a candidate for family therapy?

Anyone experiencing relational or interpersonal difficulties within the family structure can benefit from family therapy. It's not solely for immediate family members but can also include extended families, blended families, couples, or individuals dealing with relationship issues.

Families facing crises or struggling with ongoing conflicts can particularly benefit from this form of therapy.

How does family therapy work?

During family therapy, I facilitate discussions, encourage healthy communication, and help identify problematic patterns within the family system. I may use various techniques, such as:

  • Structural therapy (focuses on the family structure and boundaries)
  • Strategic therapy (implements specific interventions to address issues)
  • Narrative therapy (helps rewrite negative family narratives and promote positive ones)
  • Systemic therapy (explores the interconnectedness of family members' emotions and behaviors)

I create a safe and supportive environment where family members can express themselves, learn new ways of interacting, and develop healthier relationships. The goal is to improve understanding, strengthen relationships, and foster positive changes within the family unit.

Family therapy is a collaborative process emphasizing teamwork and mutual understanding among family members to create lasting, positive changes in their dynamics and interactions.

If you’re looking for help navigating struggles within the family unit, make an appointment online or by calling the office. Telehealth appointments are also a convenient option.
